Ingredients in Conventional Toothpaste
There are several toothpaste ingredients you might want to avoid.
This ingredient is quiet common in most toothpaste. While it helps to prevent cavities and tooth decay, it may affect bone formation and can cause fluorosis of the teeth.
A constant usage of fluoride may also cause digestive issues, kidney problems, and also acne outbreak on your skin. So make sure you don’t swallow those minty paste… Surprise, your parents did not tell you not to eat it for no reason! As a consequence, more and more toothpastes brands are now removing fluoride in their product.
Like fluoride, this is one of the most common ingredients in conventional toothpaste. Glycerin maintains the sticky, pasty consistence of the product but it also prevents your teeth from remineralising by coating your teeth. Thus, if you see that your teeth start to develop yellow colour, it is probably because of glycerin.
Some toothpaste contain triclosan. Found in antibacterial soap products to prevent bacteria and fungi, it sounds alright. However, a constant exposure to triclosan would slow down blood circulation and weaken your immune system.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
This ingredient is a part of surfactants, which gives toothpaste its foam and lather. Some of us might think that foamy toothpaste cleans better but this ingredient is unhealthy. Indeed, it can cause canker sores and mouth ulcers.
- Propylene Glycol
This ingredient is the emulsifier for toothpaste. This chemical is commonly found in antifreeze, paint and industrial enamel. Do we need to say more? This is obviously toxic for your mouth and general health.
